Guest of Honour’s Address

at

Bhojpuri Society Singapore  Dinner & Dance 2006

(Sunday, 29 October 2006)

The President & Committee Members of the

Bhojpuri Society Singapore,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

NAMASTE.

A very good evening to all of you.

It gives my family & I, great pleasure to be here this evening, to spend such an auspicious occasion with the members of the Singapore Bhojpuri community.

It is even a greater honour for me to be the Patron for your esteemed Society’s first Dinner & Dance celebration. The Society, has in the past, spearheaded and anchored several significant cultural initiatives, including the Holi celebrations in 2005 and 2006.Through such undertakings, the Society has contributed much, not just to the Bhojpuri community but the entire Indian community in Singapore. Allow me to congratulate and thank all involved in realizing such initiatives, for their tireless efforts and services.

The Bhojpuri Society in Singapore may be one that is young and just starting to establish its position in our nation.

However, the same cannot be said of the invaluable contributions made by the members of the Bhojpuri community, towards the national development of our country, Singapore. The early Bhojpuri migrants who came to Singapore, during the British colonial period, surmounted all economic odds and challenges, to etch out a credible life for them and their families. In the process, they also contributed through hard work and persistence, towards the economic development of Singapore.

Today, Singapore has developed from 3rd world to a 1st world country and we are endowed with an unsurpassed lifestyle and abundant economic opportunities. Today’s youth, including the members of the Bhojpuri Society, must not forget the lessons that our history offers. Instead, they should couple their forefathers’ tenacity and hard-work, with the global information and exposure that is available to them, to excel in whatever field they choose. In the process, they will in turn help the entire Indian community and Singapore, rise to even greater heights of development and achievement.

I am very confident that given our support, the Bhojpuri Society Singapore, will be instrumental in helping all of us realize this dream.

I don’t want to test your patience any further and be the only thing between you and dinner. My family and I wish the Bhojpuri Society Singapore and all of you, the very best in all your endeavours.

THANK YOU.
